The foundation stone of a model rise
In 1847, master goldsmith Louis Francois Cartier founded the company in Paris. Only a short time later, his son Alfred took over the leadership together with his grandchildren Louis, Pierre and Jacques. It was they who led the company onto the road to success.
In 1899, Cartier crowned its initial success with a move to Rue de la Paix, one of the most prestigious streets that attracted visitors from all over the world. With the move to this business location, the focus on the foreign market began. The first significant successes were recorded shortly afterwards. In 1904, Pierre and Louis traveled to Russia and found many inspirational ideas for their later works. The influences can still be seen in their works today. Much more important, however, was the acquisition of the Russian aristocracy and imperial family as fans of the Cartier product lines.
The conquest of the empire
In 1909, Cartier was also able to win over the English upper class and enjoyed great success with its shop in New Bond Street. Through contacts, Cartier even managed to supply pieces of jewelry to Indian princes. This resulted in orders from maharajahs for precious gemstones to be made into pieces of jewelry.
A pioneer in modern watchmaking
In the mid to late 19th century, the company manufactured jewelry watches that were worn as brooches, chatelaines, and also as pocket watches. Later, the numerous styles and shapes of the watches developed into the brand’s trademark. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company used onyx, pearls, and enamel figures for the first time to decorate the watches. The motifs go back to the various jewelry collections. At this point, Louis already knew that wristwatches would be the future.
In 1904, Cartier therefore made the Santos watch for the pioneering pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont. It was the perfect combination of form and function.
